Meeting your energy efficiency target takes time, planning, and funding. A compliance plan gives you a clear, manageable roadmap for getting there.
Requirements
A compliance plan is not required for all buildings. It’s only required if you’re applying for a Timeline Extension. However, it can be a valuable tool for any building working toward its energy efficiency target.

Steps to Create a Plan

Understand your Baseline and Targets. A data verified benchmarking report, paired with any target adjustments, incentives, or exclusions will give you a good understanding of where you stand now and where you need to go.

Choose your strategy (or strategies). An energy audit will help you understand your most cost-effective options for improving energy efficiency in your building. These strategies tend to fall into one of three categories:

Improving building operations (through building automations)

Improving existing equipment (through retro-commissioning)

Upgrading equipment to more efficient models (such as heat pumps or LED lighting)

Align the work with your target years. Pace your projects at a manageable cost and confirm you’ll demonstrate progress when performance deadlines arrive. Use the Performance Forecasting Calculator to compare your expected EUI reductions to your interim and final targets.

Document your plan. A written compliance plan is only required for a Timeline Extension, but documenting your strategy is useful for any building.
Other Compliance Options
Some buildings need a more tailored approach. For these buildings, we have several options that can make compliance more attainable.
Timeline Extensions
Buildings may encounter situations that require either short-term or long-term extensions to their compliance deadlines. See the options and requirements on the Timeline Extensions page.
Manufacturing, Agricultural, and Industrial (MAI) Buildings

Residential Condominiums
An option is available for residential condominium buildings of certain sizes and mechanical configurations. To find out more, visit the Residential Condominiums page.
Restaurants
Buildings that contain restaurants can either implement a set of kitchen energy efficiency measures or electrify a major piece of kitchen equipment. Completing one of these options will earn the building a Target Adjustment based on the size of the restaurant.
